ID Theft First Aid

Questions & Answers

If a vehicle dealership asks for drivers license information, are they not obligated to ask for written consent to photocopy the physical identification?

If an organization requires driver's license information for a transaction, one may question them as to how that information will be recorded (whether only written down, or actually photocopied and retained). There are different forms of consent, one being implied, which may have been used in this case if the individual voluntarily provided the driver's license. Individuals have a right to fully understand all the requirements around collection, use and disclosure of their personal information by organizations and would most likely best obtain this information by contacting the organization's Privacy Officer or Compliance Office directly.
