PPMI

Participants in the Alberta Pharmacy Practice Models Initiative (PPMI) will deliver services and participate in data collection to evaluate the impact on patient’s health and drug therapy outcomes. This project runs until March 31, 2010 and will help explore the future of new health services and pharmacy-related programs and payment models.

The overall purpose of PPMI is to demonstrate that through enhanced pharmacy services, patient health and quality of care can be improved. Each participating pharmacy has signed Affiliate Agreements (Pharmacy Agreement, Pharmacist Agreement, Assurance End User Agreement). The clinical services provided by pharmacists participating in the PPMI will be documented in the Assurance System™, a pharmaceutical care system licensed in Canada by Medication Management Canada (MMC). The Assurance System™ provides practice management, information management, care planning, documentation and billing, quality/audit, and various other features to support pharmacists in the provision of PPMI services.

An independent Evaluator (Broadview Applied Research Group) has been engaged to complete an evaluation of the Medication Management service model of PPMI. The evaluation is a required component of this project as stipulated by the primary source of funding, Alberta Health and Wellness. The evaluation team will contact participating pharmacists and a sample of patients who have provided written consent to be contacted to conduct interviews and/or surveys related to the evaluation of the PPMI project.

The Evaluator (Broadview Applied Research Group) will have access to personal information provided in the patient consent form (for patients that have provided consent); anonymized patient care data collected by pharmacists in the course of providing Medication Management service to patients (data that cannot be re-identified); surveys or interviews of patients (who have consented to being evaluated) receiving Medication Management services; and, surveys or interviews of pharmacists involved in the PPMI.  The Assurance System™ server and the patient file information contained is secured and maintained by Medication Management Canada (MMC).
