The Minister of Service Alberta is responsible for the administration of Alberta’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Act and the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) . The department ensures that the legislation is effective and provides support to Government of Alberta entities, local public bodies and private-sector organizations that are subject to the Acts.  Service Alberta also develops policies, standards and strategies to manage government records and information.

The Minister of Service Alberta is also responsible for the Registrar of Motor Vehicle Services (the Registrar). The Access to Motor Vehicle Information Regulation (AMVIR) is a regulation under the Traffic Safety Act of Alberta. It came into effect on May 1, 2004. AMVIR authorizes the Registrar to grant access to personal driving and motor vehicle information for the specific purposes set out in AMVIR.
